Experiential Learning Information for Faculty & Staff
Experiential Learning encompasses a range of interactive learning approaches where SOU students earn credit through the application of concepts in real-world settings. Practicum, internship, work-based learning, community-based service learning, student teaching, teaching/research assistantship, shadowing and observation can all fall under the Experiential Learning umbrella. Approvals and tracking of student experiential learning is now happening through the SOU Career Launch platform, powered by 12twenty.
What is Career Launch/12twenty?
12twenty is the educational technology company that hosts SOU Career Launch.
Career Launch is our branding for the SOU instance of 12twenty – this is where students can search our employer database, access job, internship, and volunteer opportunities from off-campus employers, complete their practicum/internship approval process, and report their post-graduation plans and outcomes.
What is the Experiential Learning module?
The Experiential Learning module within Career Launch (12twenty) is where the practicum/internship approval process is located.
What is this module replacing?
This online form and workflow is replacing the paper/PDF Student Internship Agreement and WorkSite Agreement. Those forms have been wrapped up together in this online form.
Who should fill out the Experiential Learning form?
Students who have already identified a practicum host site/opportunity. Like the previous paperwork, the student will need to list a practicum supervisor and host site information.
When should a student complete the form on the module?
Prior to beginning their practicum experience, as it has the liability paperwork/worksite agreement for practicum sites embedded in this form for practicum supervisors to approve/e-sign.
Where can a student access Career Launch?
From okta.sou.edu > Add Apps > Search Career Launch. They can log in using their SOU single-sign-on SSO.
It is directly available using the Career Launch button at the top of this page, or at sou.12twenty.com/login
Is there a tutorial?
Students can utilize this PDF walk-through, the video tutorial, or receive help from Career Connections in-person/by zoom if they have technical difficulties or need assistance.
How do I sign/approve?
You will receive an email:
Subject line: “Initial Approval needed for [Department Name] – Practicum/Internship (for credit)”
Body: “Dear [Name], Initial Approval needed for [Student Name]’s [Department Name] – Practicum/Internship (for credit) at [Employer].” This will contain a hyperlink for you to open the form, review the information, and approve or send back to the student for more information. This hyperlink continues to work after approval.
My student submitted but I haven’t received an email to approve.
Most departments have set the workflow to proceed first to the practicum site supervisor, and once that person has hit approve, flow to the faculty member. The student should: double-check the contact information they input, check in with their practicum supervisor (ask them to check spam, just in case!), and then contact Career Connections if the problem is not resolved.
How can faculty or staff access Career Launch?
If you would like a student-view so that you can demo the process, we can create a student account for you. Otherwise we can create an admin account for you to access through sou.admin.12twenty.com. (Note the alternative URL for admin access). This will let you access the system, filter through student applications, and more. However, if you have admin access, you may be asked to log-in when approving a student’s Experiential Learning submission. Those without admin access will still receive student forms for approval to their email, and be able to approve without log in.
I’m working on a course that involves practical learning (community-based service learning, for example), should I be using this form?
If students are completing projects underneath individual supervisors, perhaps. If the full group/class is partnering with a single organization/project, probably not. Contact Career Connections.
I would like an account, I’m having trouble logging in, or a different faculty member needs access?
